Hi there, i recently tried running the game using the -dxlevel 80 method (steam > games > tf2 > launch options) I really love this method since my card is pretty old now (7600gt) with -dxlevel 80 i can run the game on max and it runs very smooth, where as with directx9 i have to run on medium/low to maintain decent fps..

anyway..

When i use the -dxlevel 80 method and edit my video settings / resolution / etc. it runs properly and everything is ok, but when i close the game and open it again the settings go back to default so i have to always edit the video settings whenever i run the game.

This only happens with -dxlevel 80 in the launch settings.

Is there a way to keep -dxlevel 80 in the launch settings but also save my video settings so i don't have to always edit them whenever i run the game?

cheers.

-dxlevel 81 has been causing issues for many lately. Its best to pick 80 for diagnostics and if it works from there you can try 81

Whenever the game is started with -dxlevel it resets video settings, but you only need to run it once to set the DirectX version. Run once under dxlevel 81 (or whatnot), remove it from your launch options, and you'll be golden.

Anyone else running -dxlevel 80?  If so how does it look?  I've been browsing the steam forums lately and there's been a lot of complaints of frame-rate drops after the November 21 update.  Apperently something to do with "textures".  I'm going to try it when I get home but I'm bored at work and curious.  I've got a

- Pentium D 820 Dual Core 2.8Ghz
- 2 Gig of RAM
- X1950 Pro ATI card

I get 40-60 in the open but in a fight I drop to 10-20 maybe.  This is with all the settings low and the card over clocked.  Any suggestions welcome.  Thanks.

You shouldn't have to do that. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the video card. I've got a similar rig; same graphics card, Amd X2 4000+, and I can run 1024x768 with everything maxxed out and not drop below 30 fps or so.
I'd say it's either your drivers, bunch of stuff running in the background, or maybe too much AA/Filtering at too high a resolution.
The card is good, but if it only has 256 Mb of RAM on it like mine, lots of activity in TF2 with everything up all the way @ 1280x1024 slows it down some.

Ok, I'll look for updates when I get home.  I have a bunch of image names under my name in the task manager > processes tab, but none of them are using the cpu.  Does that matter?  I do have the 256Mb X1950 and I believe I'm running 1024x768.  I have a 19" monitor.  I've been tweaking and I think I may have made it worse.  I might just default everything and see what happens.
