Man, that game was barren last time I played it (a year ago, which is still like two years after release.) I guess this is in celebration of the (apparently new) World Leaders mode.

The gist of the game is that Mr. X has invited you aboard his cruise ship, you and several other players, along with some NPCs. The catch is that, once there, he wants you to kill someone else on the ship - if you don't, he'll kill you AND your family. So you play along.

The cruise ship has all the amenities, from bathrooms to on-deck pools (deathtrap) to fancy restaraunts and saunas (deathtrap.) It also has a healthy supply of weapons (umbrella, knife, flare gun, golf club, etc.) You have to find a weapon and kill your target (everyone gets one.) Finding your target can prove difficult, as you have to satisfy I think eight needs (hunger, fatigue, shower-neediness, gotta-pee-itude, etc.) So while you're trying to track down your target (who, like everyone else on the ship, is given a random name to blend in) in a sea of NPCs, you should avoid pooping yourself, avoid getting caught with a weapon in front of a guard, camera, or other passenger, avoid the guy trying to kill you, and maybe get a nice steam.

Rarer/exotic weapons/deathtraps award you with more money, last man/woman standing wins, and if you get busted you are fined and sent to jail. (Money is not just points - you often need to spend it to satisfy needs or bribe guards. Just don't get pummeled while you're at the ATM.)

I've never played it, but the premise seems interesting.

It's not like $5 is a huge expense.

It's fun, with caveats. If you've ever played spy, there are some analogues. You want to sneak off into secluded places without anyone thinking it suspicious and trying to catch you (so they witness you and you go to jail.) You want to follow your mark without them getting suspicious and camping a guard. You want to look like a total NPC to make it that much harder for your hunter to ID you. You have to bide your time, for sure, and act casual, and all the while satisfy hunger and boredom and basic hygiene. Seriously, this is a game where you can (and often do) get killed washing your hands.

Problem is, the game's been out so long that a) hardly anyone plays it anymore, and b) those that play it are either totally new and no good, or they've played for so long that they can detect the subtlest of nuances when it comes to the spy-acting up above. They also know the maps inside out - and the maps are complex creatures. So it can be very frustrating.

The matches tend to last a while - if you get pegged early on in the game, you'll be stuck spectating or NPCing (walking around satisfying needs with no prey and no weapon use.) The witness system also feels a bit touch-and-go; often you will end up in jail seemingly inexplicably, and other times you can revolver your mark in front of a camera (can't be bribed) and suffer no penalties.

Also, last I played (two months ago), I couldn't find a single server where any player had a ping below 120.

But if we could get a TF2F thing going on, I'd love to pick it back up again.
