So yesterday I hooked my PC up to my TV for the first time. It ran great, except it has trouble keeping a reliably playable ping (which is understandable, I guess). I used a Belkin wireless G card, but we have an N router. Now, the PC does really poorly with wifi, but the PS3 hooked up to the same TV does amazingly well (never below 4 megs a second, usually above 5). I was thinking of using the PS3 as a sort of wifi router and hooking it up via ethernet with my PC so I could play TF2 and stuff. I know there are lots of things that could and probably would go wrong, but if any of you think it'll work I'd like you to say so.

So are you hooking up your TV to your computer wirelessly? or did you move your PC to your TV and are running the computer wirelessly to the internet?

Sorry I didn't clarify. The computer is hooked up to the TV through a VGA cable, it's connecting to the internet through wifi.

If you're noticing better performance with your PS3 than you are with your computer then the problem may be the network card in your computer. A few questions.
1) Do you only notice lag when you're playing games?
2) Is the problem in all games or only certain ones?
3) How old is the computer?
4) Can you hook up the computer directly to your router to see if you get better latency?

4-5Mbps really isn't a great connection, even for the PS3. You may need to open ports in your router to let gaming traffic through. If you're playing Steam games there are specific ports that Valve recommends opening in your router to get the best performance. If you check Valve's support page you'll find a few articles that talk about what ports to open.

Only through wifi. Normally I have the computer directly connected to the router and have a great ping (below 20 is pretty common, but there are usually 10-15 servers I get in the single digits).
2) Is the problem in all games or only certain ones?
The only one I've tried is TF2 through wifi on the PC, but on the PS3 I never lag in Uncharted 2.
3) How old is the computer?
Just over a year.
4) Can you hook up the computer directly to your router to see if you get better latency?
See answer number one.

4-5Mbps is perfectly functional, though. All I want is for TF2 to function via wifi. Do you think getting a wireless N card would help?

Before you spend money on a new wireless card see if opening ports in your router will help your TF2 performance. The specific ports you need are listed here, https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711. You'll have to consult your router's manual for the specifics on where the port forwarding is located in your model.

Even though I'm connected directly to my router I found that I got better performance after opening those ports.

My comment on the connection was implying that your PS3 should be connecting at higher speeds than 4-5Mbps. Depending on how far away your router is and the materials used in your residence may also be a factor why you're not getting a good connection. Wireless g supports 54Mbps so your computer should be getting a great connection unless the problem is with the place you live. The PS3 also has wireless b/g so it should be getting better speeds as well.

Are you serious?  Back home I play games on 500kbs just fine, for the most part.

"for the most part."

4-5 may be fine for gaming, but I was just referring to the connection its self.

I'm just saying 4-5 is extremely fast compared to what I've got back home and I find it ironic people can call that "slowish" when 500kbs seems to load almost and web page at a decent speed, play videogames, and stream HD videos.  You just can't download stuff really fast and I honestly do not understand how 4-5mbs would be inadequate for gaming, which is what it seems like you are implying.

I agree entirely with Stud. I used to play on a 256kbps connection in Germany and it still ran fine without a hitch or lag. Now that I'm on a 10mbps connection I hardly notice any difference at all other than downloads. Maybe it was an isolated situation, but games truely don't require that much bandwidth. I know L4D1 required about 4kbps for a stable connection.
