Copy pasta from the UDK FAQ:
I’ve been making mods for Unreal Tournament 3. How does UDK differ from the UT3 editor? You
can create standalone applications with UDK. This means that users will
be able to install and run your game without owning a copy of Unreal
Tournament 3.
I think this is unprecedented (considering it was until now a commercial license engine).
You can now make free games for windows using the same game/rendering engine as borderlands, arkham asylum, bioshock, bioshock2, crimecraft, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Mass effect, Mirrors Edge, and UT3?
Im guessing that the only downside is that you cant modify the engine?
Brilliant move on Unreals part. Take one of the most popular game engines of the current line of engines and make it near ubiquitous by giving free access to it.
Those that hate Unreal config scripting are gonna have a rough few years =P
