Ok so I got my first real taste of competitive play yesterday and my team being the stuck ups they are wouldn't let me pyro at all so I went heavy. Competitive is a whole different feeling than pubs, you ALWAYS have a medic who is competant and it's great to be able to make a push knowing your medic won't run away or charge into the fray leaving you to die. After playing about 5 games with heavy I have to say that he maybe not the funnest class, he is the one I am best at. Also I figured out that the heavy isn't about always getting the jump on the enemy, its about pushing the enemy back and allowing your team to mop up the kills while you get asists (sort of like pyro). But I didn't just come here with a story saying how I am good at heavy. I want to ask some of you competitive heavys how you deal with the offensive when the sollies are playing peek-a-boo with you and the demo's are launching stickies over stuff so they can't be hit. Thanks.

Pyro in competitive can be done, I'm probally just not skilled enough to use him well enough but anyways the soldiers who get me are always by suprise like for example the bridge on badlands they rocketjump over it (I expect it now but didn't for the first match or two) and shoot a rocket making me eat 2 or 3 of them usually ending up in the opposing heavy mopping me up.

Heavy is high in instilling fear in your enemy. In competitive play, I'll rarely take on a heavy as soldier, even if I have a good medic for 2 reasons:
  • The heavy will usually have a medic on him, so it's very much in his favor
  • The amount of time it takes to bring down a heavy means other enemies will spot you long before you're done, and kill you.
Better off running away and letting better suited classes (demo/spy) take him on.

Yeah, spy is best suited to take on a heavy/medic, and it can be pretty hard to get behind and get both. Saw you playing today Saint, you are one fine heavy and an even better pyro.

Thanks. I'm still new to real competitive so I am trying to get better and if the clan I am currently in falls apart (looks like it will) I plan to apply for the community clan as I understand you guys do have weekly scrims with the competitive team and I want to be a part but got ignored twice so I got a bit frustrated. That is something in itself tho.

I played another scrim yesterday and I think I have a bit of a solution. The soldier tried to rocket up meaning he is either overhealed or damaged and if i dont see a medic i assume he is damaged so i focus my efforts on him for a second and damage him as much as i can getting him down because he will be really hurt pulling back from the fray or just charging to death and then going back to pushing the opposing forces back and if the soldier tries to run i pull out shotty and I have gotten a couple of kills.

I played helter today but he was playing heavy so I really didn't have a chance to play him as a demo so I am still working on a good demo strategy. If I get the chance to play a really good demo and can find a way to kill them aside from catching them off guard or just luck I will post.

You know the answer Saint, more practice.

And, for the record I've played with Saint alot, and I don't really care if my word counts at all but he is a fantastic player.  Whatever lackings he thinks he has, he makes up for with being a good guy with good communication, and just plain good teamwork.

When I play medic, he's one guy I will look hard for.

Demos are a big problem if they have cover to hide behind. They will corner shot three stickies at you, and if one of them is a crit, and you don't get the hell away in time, you are going to get gibbed.

There are going to be rare times when you will find yourself facing off with a Demo without the help of your teammates. In any other situation, you are better off pulling back to an area out of his range of stickies (meaning he would have to charge which gives you time to shoot his stickies away) and wait for him to come to you.

If you're attacking, someone else should be shooting at that Demo. Seriously.
