I hope this is on the right forum

I've been playing tf2 for about 2 years now but i still get owned cuz i cant choose a class to practice with.
Any ideas how to find a good class or what the different playstyles are for each class?

I think the fastest way would just to scan over YouTube frag videos and see which class looks the most interesting gameplay-wise to you. After you pick one or two, try them out and see if you enjoy it as much as you had hoped. If you do, stick with it. If not, then just keep going using the process of elimination.

Of course, if you wish to play competitively, then your list narrows down to four classes:
  • Demoman
  • Soldier
  • Medic
  • Scout
...with one of the Scouts sometimes switching over to play Sniper on some parts of a map.

Hey Hanso, welcome to the forums.

Personally, I took a while to figure out what I liked doing most. I think one of the best ways to start is to see what class type you like most. Scout, Soldier, & Pyro are Offence, Demoman Heavy and Engineer are Defence, and Medic, Sniper and Spy are support.

Basically, offence is the main driving force for the game. If you like to play with an in-your-face style, very FPS, I'd say start there. Especially if you're coming from other games like COD or Halo. These guys can be really fun.

If you like more defensive, strategic, think-before-you-leap style, defence is great, especially demo and engy. Imo Heavy is defence when by himself, but he is almost always paired with a medic, making him more offensive in my view.

Now support are the most fun to play in my opinion. While the other two class types are battling it out in their usual fashion, you get to be the special guy that can really tip the balance of winning or losing. A well placed sniper or spy can destroy an entire team. Medic is a great class to play too, can't have enough medics. You generally stick with the offensive guy but can definitely roll with defence (remember what I said about heavy). You get to be in-the-action, while still not having to be the guy shooting the big guns. Careful though, everyone wants to kill you.

My advice to you is to check out the 3 different sets of classes, and see what you like best. From there you can go into the specifics. Remember though, nothing is tieing you down to just one class. It's always great to have a main to fall back on, but you can play whatever you like. Personally, I main as spy but also play engineer quite a lot. I've seen this duo a bunch of times before. I guess it's kind of a I love infiltrating and destroying unknown, yet I still know that it's pissing the engineers off? I think it makes me play both classes (spy & engineer) better. Anyway, this is my advice, but above all, play what's the most fun.

And if all else fails, you can always go pyro.

I like the strategic thinking, but i just dont have enough patience for being engi

so i guess ill try demo and see how it works

I also have the craziest ideas on where to place stickies, so no1 expects them

Oh right, because the other classes are used just ever so much in competitive play.

What do you mean by that?

In scrims, those are the four classes used the most, with Sniper being the 5th most used and the others being used so rarely.

I don't get how you can say that's bullshit when it's like, you know. Pretty much fact.

Those are the 4 classes that are the standard ready-to-play units of this game. Without the others TF2 wouldn't be anything.
As the main spray battle units pyro and heavy can be incredibly useful in certain siuations. The spy is incredibly strategic. He can complement the 4 classes you mentioned beautifully. Shooting from ahead in the usual fashion is great, with a medic is better, but if you've also got a man behind them killing them that can only be a +1.

I agree the traditional engy isn't usually used in scrim gameplay. That, is because he is not mobile. It takes time to set up sentries and dispensors.
Look at some players though, he can be great in small numbers (game size-wise) if he knows what he's doing. Although I will give it to you with 8v8's on regular sized maps engy is not the way to go.

That being said I don't think Hanso is incredibly interested in scrimming in this point.

You say that these 4 are the most used, agreed. You say that they're the only ones that can be used competetively. Bullshit.

Your above statement makes it sound like you're talking about a pub. If you tell a person SURE MAIN WHATEVER YOU WANT, YOU CAN STILL JOIN A TEAM AND START PLAYING IN LEAGUES NO MATTER WHAT LATER ON then you're lying.

I'm not saying those are the only ones used competitively. If a person plays Pyro and then decides he wants to start scrimming with teams, nobody's going to accept him as a Pyro. He might be useful in those rare situations, but if he MAINS Pyro, then who will pick him over the person who mains one of the typical four-comp-class selection?

If you main any class other than one of the four competitive classes (excluding badass Snipers, which are sometimes on teams), then people are just going to tell you you'll have to re-main your class as one of the four main comp classes.

Besides, a person who's great at Scout or Soldier probably won't have that much trouble trying to play Engie or Pyro in a situational event, whereas if you main Pyro, you'll probably find converting to Scout difficult at first.

@smalls
I realize that I'm relatively new to these forums, but I have been playing this game for a while on both a competetive and casual basis.

Yes, I have pugged on a 6v6 team. Yes, our team was most likely made up of the 4 classes Infy mentioned.
My question to you is have you ever pugged with a 6v6 team in arena? The rules change imo. Classes like pyro and engy become drastically more useful, and ones like Scout (imo) and heavy become less.
