best linux distro and dedicated server info

Looking to see what you guys think about this-

I don't know much about servers and correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there no 100 tick TF2 servers? 

If extreme performance isn't what you're after, an Ubuntu distro would do fine. You can use Xubuntu, which is lightweight to begin with, and install it on your system. I would think that a server of that standard could handle maybe 80 player slots. Any way you can divvy up 80 slots between server instances, you'd be fine. Just test them, to make sure performance is up to par. Since Linux is so efficient to begin with, any distro without KDE should be fine. KDE is resource-hogging desktop use environment, has no place on a server, IMO.

Personally for servers I say nothing but debian, but im biased.

I wouldnt put ubuntu on on server that required a high degree of uptime.

The machine could prolly handle < 8 servers, depending on fps. Theres prolly people more knowledgable about this.

I've heard that Ubuntu SERVER works well and is able to handle 1000 FPS "out of the box."  Any Linux SERVER distro will NOT have a GUI, so you shouldn't have to worry about what computergeniusman was talking about.

Nime is correct, TF2 does NOT run higher then 66 Tic.  You can set it higher, but it defaults back to 66.  Some companies clam to have "worked around it" but their server still run at 66.

I would say that each core can handle one 24-slot server and possible another smaller server (10 or 12).  So that would end up being about 4 large and 4 small servers.  They say a Q6600 (2.4 Quad Core) can handle about one 24-slot server per core.  So your processor should be able to handle a bit more.

Ubuntu server is pretty nifty.

All the ubuntu fans should know that ubuntu is based quite highly on debian. Debian is just developed to be more stable.

Yes, Ubuntu (and many popular distros) and Debian based.  Ubuntu is generally more up-to-date.

Frankly, I stopped caring about true Debian since the whole Ice Weasel vs Firefox crap.

CentOS gets my vote, you can Google and research Ubuntu vs. CentOS for server hosting and the case is pretty clear... although I won't go into details here. With that configuration on a CentOS build I'd say you could get at least 8-10 servers going at once. I currently run 4 32-mans on a CentOS VPS that only has 1.5gb of dedicated memory and a single 3.0GHz quad-core Xeon, average FPS of 90-120 and ping below 60.
