I would've done this over Steam, but I don't really want to bother RBR when he's doing something else, considering his busy schedule.

Chuckles: "If you want to tell RBR that he's completely wrong for not wanting certain topics discussed on *HIS* website, then by all means... tell him."

I just wanted to make a humble suggestion. This is one of the more mature Internet communities I've been a part of. I know that "mature" and "Internet" don't usually go together, but that's part of what impresses me about this community. In most groups, political/religious discussions would quickly devolve into trolling and insults, etc., which would in-turn hurt the community, but that doesn't seem to happen that much here, which has been proven by at least 2-3 other threads here.

So, my suggestion is to change the current policy on this, so that such threads may stay open so long as they don't completely devolve into the childishness that is most threads in most other communities.

I also just want to say, since I don't want to squander any opportunity I have to say it, regardless of how you decide on this particular subject, thank you RBR for this community. This is by far the best Internet community on every account I've ever been a part of, and I really appreciate all the work you've done.

I think that deep politics and religion discussions on the internet are just chum in the water for trolls and ignorant fools. While I do think that a majority of the community here is capable of acting mature, it only takes 1 or 2 insane comments to make otherwise reasonable people lose their minds when it comes to those topics.

This is just me speaking as a community member, not an admin, but I personally come to this site to talk about gaming with other like-minded people. I may be interested in people's opinions about other pop culture related items, but this isn't where I want to come to get into knock down drag out fights over shit that, frankly, depresses me. It just doesn't seem like we need those topics to be more complete as a community. If I did want to talk politics, I'd rather do it in a Vent channel, over email with people I know and enjoy debating with, or on a site that's more appropriate for that.

I personally dont think that any deep non-gaming discussions belong on these forums.
Why? Not only is it not the right place (we are a gaming forum), but it isnt even a good place (people here are dumb/justwanna play games).

If you want to have a good discussion about something there are MANY MANY places/forums where you can go and have a PROPER intellectual discussion about these things with people that actually know what they are talking about.
People on ourforums don't seem to really know how to formulate a proper argument anyway, so you just end up cat fighting in circles.

How is this different than any other thread? It's useless to be worried about what "might" happen on an internet forum.

I'm with fortunate on this one.

EDIT: Album, but I enjoy talking with the people in this forum. I'm not gonna go find some random forum focused on religion, or science, or politics, or whatever, because a) those forums are probably lame and b) my friends here aren't members of those forums.

This site stopped being "just a gaming forum" a LONG time ago.

I just dont see the point of 'talking' about deep topics when people

1. dont know what they are talking about
2. dont know how to argue what they are talking about
3. dont research what they are talking about

so you have a bunch of guys talking about shit and they barely understand what they are saying. THATS lame imo.
Your friends CAN be members of those forums, and you can also make new friends that know how to have a proper discussion about things.

IMO this site is still very gaming oriented. only 10-15% of threads seem to be non-gaming related. so i would very much disagree with you on that topic.

It just seems like people react politics and religion differently - it's a more personal and deeply felt thing for a lot of people. I mean, I have strong opinions on other things, but ultimately, my belief that Crash was the worst Best Picture Ever isn't something that DEFINES me as a person or whatever. Whereas I can see why people get all crazy and defensive about their politics and religion.

Whatever RBR decides is fine with me, but I just don't feel like it's really worth changing the policy for.

Just to clarify, I didn't intend for this to be a discussion thread, per se. If it turns into that, so be it, but I want to clarify that I said what I wanted to say in my first post. As far as I can tell, in the end, it's RBR's decision, and he'll either agree with me that this community mature enough to handle it, or he will disagree, or whatever. I made my suggestion and that's all I wanted to do

Honestly I'm only interested in the religion/science side of it, like in the thread was recently closed. I don't care about discussing politics near as much and I don't really know how informed the people here are on that.

Just because we all share the same hobby doesn't mean that's all we're about. Every forum EVER has had an "off-topic" forum, which is what our General Chat is. "Talk about anything here - only good natured chat, no deep politics or religion please." This just strikes me as an assumption that deep politics or religion will NOT be good natured, which I think is a false assumption.

Man, I love politics, but I can't debate very well even though I think I am a rather well informed citizen and there are worse people.  It really gets bad when you have the sheltered 14 year olds that try to talk politics and just spread misinformation.  I think the political threads around election time were a good example of this.

lol yes
