don't build predictably.

at the beginning of a round, an engineer will and should run down to the intel and build a sentry. it's the best way to fend off the inevitable scout rush. However, whenever I play scout I see engineers building in the same places. It's really easy to take out an engineer trying to put up his sentry gun when I know exactly where he's likely to build it.

engineers, if you want to discourage a scout rush, build your sentry in a place you don't normally use. it doesn't matter if it's not the most strategically optimal place, it's the unexpectedness that matters right now. once you feel like people are catching on and start fighting back, demolish your stuff and retreat to a more "normal" place to build, or change to another random place.

I love setting up level 1 sentrys in non conventional places. You can get so many kills.

Placing a sentry under water is always a great spot. People jump in and betime they release they are getting shot they are dead.

i also love 2fort and accept it as the only map, such that you must go down to the intel to build a sentry

^ you obviously don't play many ctf maps. There are many maps that require a sentry in the intel room. 2fort is one of the ctf maps that actually does not require a sentry down there because you can cover all entrances that go downstairs with 1 sentry.

I'd rather build in a normal place and deter people from entering than building in a different spot and have it demolished a few seconds later due to bad positioning.

If you're getting scout rushed as an engineer on 2Fort you're doing it wrong.

not just referring to 2fort, even though the strategy does work there. Turbine's first few minutes is usually just scouts running from the spawn. whenever i place a sentry in a standard place, the three enemy scouts can usually rush in and take out the sentry before it's even up. those few extra seconds it takes them to figure out where i put the turret is sometimes all it takes. on 2fort, scouts can easily run directly to the intel while everybody's rushing out the battlements across the bridge. not much engies can do about it.

^ not much engies can do about it? Have you ever played engineer on 2fort before? You put a sentry in the door way at the top of the stairs, in the room with the hay piles. It covers all entrances to basement.
