I'd say work the kinks out on various public servers and then when you're ready, come try out our TF2F servers. If you join us in Vent, pretty soon I'm sure you'll meet plenty of people who are willing to help you out as well

Ventrilio installed and a user name selected) type "!vent" into public
chat. Through the magic of the internets, you will be connected to our
Ventrilio server and placed in the lobby, to chat with us as you will.
