When I play medic, i seem to get a higher score than with other classes. Is this because I'm better at medic than the other classes, or is it just easier to score with medic?

If you are being an effective medic it is not unusual for you to find yourself in the top three scorers on your team.  Like any class there is a learning curve, but the Medic class is not as steep as others so I guess that makes it easier.  It's not difficult to learn to manipulate the medic controls.  However, the skill of the medic come more from learning the maps and knowing where to lead your team.  The best way to think about the medic is that you have the unique ability to act as the eyes of your team and asses the entire battle field.  Since you don't need to keep watching your healing target expand you focus to the action happening all around you and your team.  Watch for Spies, Snipers, Pyros and Scouts trying to flank you or your team mates and let people know.  Also, Don't be afraid to run away from a bad situation.   If your Heavy thinks he is invincible because you are following him and runs out into a bad spot remember that your uber is more important then his life.  Harsh reality, but it's true.  If I yell at my Heavy to fall back and he does not, well then he deserves to die.   I'll be damned if I'm going with him.

I agree. When healing, battle awareness is a necessary skill. Learning how to arc the needle gun is also an important skill.

Of course, with battle awareness, a good player will eventually find the opportunity to use the bowsaw. That's where the new bonesaw weapon comes in handy.

Personally, I never use the Ubersaw.  For me and the way I play it does not fit to well.  For me as Medic melee is an absolute last resort when I need to try and kill someone, so the hit in attack speed is more of a detriment to me.  My load out typically is: Blutsauger, Medi-gun, Bonesaw.  However, i have been practicing more with the Kritzkreig recently.  Plus the animation when you switch to the Kritzkreig is so sweet.

Being a mediocre/decent medic is not hard, put a week into it and you'll get there. Being a master medic is different because medic is a constant learning experience, even after 415 hours I'm still learning little niches here and there. It's the nature of the class. In regards to skill/mastery it's completely different than the other 8 classes, it's so damn fickle it's insane.

One of the most important things in regards to playing at a higher level of medic is Triage. This is one of those things I speak of when I talk about a "constant learning experience." This is a skill that can be constantly improved, there is no limit.

  • Triage is the process of prioritizing patients based on the severity of their condition so as to treat as many as possible when resources are insufficient for all to be treated immediately.

It was easy for me to become a competent medic who scored highly and helped my team.

I'm acutely aware that there's still a huge difference between my medic skills and someone like Smer - for some reason, his uber builds faster than mine, he lives longer, his patients die less... *shrug* I don't get it.

If teams are even and the fighting is relatively constant (ie both teams aren't just turtling), medics will be at or near the top of the scoreboard, especially with nocrits. If one team is rolling another the big killers will be on top. All else being equal it's easier to score high as a medic than other classes.

being a master medic is....being a master of dodging, moving oddly around maps.....always keeping walls and other obstacles between you and fire while still healing your target.
Another skill is sometimes...choosing between the lesser of two evils. Should I expose myself to the mediocre sniper or the decent scout behind? Sometimes you have to make that choice and the extra 4-5 seconds of life it gives you can be the difference. You need to keep tabs on whether spies or snipers are up, as well. Maybe the sniper is down, giving you the ability to run outside away from the scout and not run into Mr Snuts for the insta-pwn.

You also must be ALWAYS looking behind as often as you can, not just for spies but also so you can inform your target he needs to turn around and kill someone.

That being said, one decent medic can make a pub team about 20000 times better. If you have good enough attack classes, a medic will very often get in the Top 3 at the end of a round, especially if you are the only medic or the only one doing anything.

Space, Out!

Medic is actually the hardest class I would say. Sure it is easy to learn but I will compare it to the rocket launcher from the original quake. Sure anyone can pick up that rocket launcher and kill people over and over but only a few can guide shots and pop people into the air and gib them over and over. Medic is easy to learn but near impossible to master just because of the depth to it. I have 70 hours in medic and I am still learning things here and there. If I quit playing pyro (125 hours) then I would probally be able to talk about medic more as he maybe my main but not my most played. Meaning only time will get you good at the class as Smerbuick said.

On a related note, COMMUNICATE as that is the main part of being a medic and most people don't understand this. That is what seperates the good medics from the medics i consider to be the worst annoyance in the game. These medics hit the uber randomly, run away from you when you spam medic, when you switch your weapon spamming medic while at 10 health burning he is spamming the needle gun at you, sticks to 1 person and don't tell their team anything. My logic being if you don't have a mic then use some kind of system with the voice commands to let your patient know (I have done this with my real life friends as they don't always have a mic). Without communication a medic is worth about as much as a dispenser in my opinion.

That is how I seperate a good and a bad medic. Hope this helps.
