Alot of people underestimate lvl 1 sentry but i have gotten alot of kill playing lvl 1 sentry in odd spot (especially water). Lvl 3 sentry is powerful yes, but it just tell the enemy: zap me, uber here, or avoid this spot. The advantage of using lvl 1 is that you can quickly move the sentry to a new location so the enemy wont be expecting it. I often spawn a sentry and then use my shotty to lure enemy to chase me Making lvl 3 often i found myself wasting too much time and then the round ended before i even know it. What do you think?

i always try to upgrade my SG, if it gets blown up i'll build it elsewhere. what else am i gonna do once i built a level 1 SG? lol

if there are enemies i'd lure them too but often a lone engineer can't really survive that long against heavier types, a couple of rockets is enough to destroy the SG, might as well move as quickly as you can and collect metals to upgrade it until the enemy takes it out. the engi is fast, just strafe around collecting metal!

if you're in water it's even better! lots of metal!

another thing, when being chased, i just drop a SG around a corner (or something) and keep on running. it'll buy you valuable seconds to backtrack and use your shotty!

Level 1's are great because you dont care if it goes down, you just plop another one down in a different spot.

EDIT: I quoted for truth Hellblazer for saying that Level 1's are great. You just don't mind your lvl 1 getting blown up. You just put another back on.

now if you think about that, you could become annoying as hell to the enemy just like what a scout could do to a medic heavy combo....engies and scouts are so related......

Bad idea, I've killed many lvl 1 sg's as a scout, anything bigger and they don't stand a chance. Fun if you're just playing to mess about though.

Level 1's server their purpose quite effectively, but level 2's I think are the perfect medium for all sentries.   I rarely build lvl 3's anymore, but find myself putting level 2's up quite frequently.

I can't count the times a sneakily placed lvl 1 has saved my ass.

When most people see an engie without any buildings nearby, the first thought in their head is "Cool! Free points!" One of my favorite tactics is to drop one just behind the current skirmish line and then come out for potshots.  Barring snipers, someone will come at me, and I'll backpedal,  shotgunning away.  With a bit of luck, I can get two or three kills before being forced to relocate (courtesy of an offensive push, usually).

Just dropping a lvl 1 sentry creates a fallback position for you and your team, and it can quickly be developed into a full-fledged outpost if need be.

I say, drop a lvl 1 to create a fallback position any time your team is making an offensive foray.  If the push is successful, hey, it's just a lvl 1, no big investment.  If your team is pushed back, you can turn it into a hardpoint and keep up the onslaught until your team breaks through.

On 2fort, several times I've stuck down a sentry just at the bottom of the spiral ramp, around the corner to the right so it can't be been by people coming down. They exit the bottom, and are running directly away from the sentry. Anything bigger than L1, and it can be seen. I killed three scouts with this yesterday without repairing it.

But it was a pub, so results may vary!
